Gratitude and Joy

Posted by: Naz Laila

I am doing  the Gift of imperfection e-course with Brene Brown and we were sharing our stories of finding joy and practicing gratitude last week. I had a’ A-h-a moment ‘, when I heard Brene saying ” through my research I have found that joyful people are not grateful, rather grateful people are joyful”.

I can now see how I have invited more joy and peace in my life this year. I have not had any major change in any aspect of my life (finance , relationship, job , health, etc).  However,  I have experienced a major shift in my attitude and perspective since I have started to write down about the things that I am grateful for. It is not a detail gratitude journaling  but a simple list of things that I am so thankful for and know in my heart that I have been very fortunate to have them in my life.

There were hard days when I felt stuck in a dark place, lost in my path to see the beauty and struggled to find  the meaning. All those times that gratitude list worked as a guide post to bring joy and peace in my life.  From  experiencing the everyday beauty to having a wonderful family celebration, I am immensely grateful for each of these wonderful blessings.

I have created a photo collage of some the  things that makes me grateful and joyful.

I would love to know where do you find joy? What are you grateful for this year?

With love and gratitude,

Naz

Naz, your joyful spirit shines through in the photos of your beautiful daughters, your family, your artwork, and the smile in your own photo. I want to feel that joy. This post is a wonderful reminder of a habit I have yet to master. I love your paintings and assume you are the artist. Thank you for your inspiration.

Gay thanks a lot for your kind words. I know practising gratitude and feeling grateful for our everyday blessings takes a lot of time and mindfulness. I do struggle sometimes but then just coming back to my list and being gentle on myself helps. I am so happy to know you. And yes I am the artist of these etwo art works. I am just a beginner but sharing my work with the world anyway.

I am grateful for so much this year. To have a warm roof over my head, for my animals. For figuring out (or getting closer to) finding my true purpose in life. And for the health of my family and loved ones. I can’t ask for more. I have found my weekly post about things for which I am grateful has made me a happier person, and it’s something I look forward to writing every week.

This was a beautiful post, Naz. I have subscribed by email and saw it yesterday morning and wanted to remember to comment, so better late than never!

Oh, and I am also grateful for having “met” you in the online photography course!

Terri thank you so much for sharing your gratitude list with us. Your life perspective is really inspiring. I hope finding your true purpose brings more joy to your life.

Lovely post Naz! I especially love the photo collage–terrific having the visual gratitude. :) I also practice gratitude and have found it to be very powerful in changing my mood and perspective. I write about the research behind the practice in my post: http://powerupproject.com/boosting-happiness/

Naz, Lovely post full of pics to inspire. I couldn’t take this course, but it sounds like a good one so thanks for sharing these wise words about gratitude. I have come to realise that I crave the giving back, the gratitude, it’s almost a completion, making space for the next opening, making space for the joy. Lovely.

Suzi, thanks for the lovely comment. I would write a separate post with all the wisdom I have gathered through the course.I totally agree with you that gratitude makes space for joy and new opening.

Naz – how cute are your girls! Love these pictures and a sterling idea to have a picture collage of what you’re grateful for, rather than simply writing it down.

Lovely post! A great perspective too. I am just so thankful for my kids, they are just delicious in every way and I can’t believe they are mine. They are a joy and I know I am rich because of them.

Thanks a lot Stephanie. I am totally with you . Along with many challenges that motherhood brings the unconditional love and joy it gives us, makes everything worth it.

Those photos are beautiful. A picture tells a thousand words, and you have captured so much with these.

” through my research I have found that joyful people are not grateful, rather grateful people are joyful”…this really got me thinking. I never thought about it, but actually it makes sense.

I think I will start making a list of the things I’m grateful for.

    Nice post. Thank you!
